Christian says I don't post often enough (I don't post nearly as often as last summer, for sure...). Who thinks its his turn?

When it works...

Moments like this don't come very often, but when they do, I remember why I had 4 kids in less than 5 years...Its so amazing when they are friends!~

Adventures in Food

Christian and I enjoy cooking, but up until we were married, I was fairly timid in the things I ate or the new foods I'd try. While I still avoid ketchup, mustard, and mushrooms, I'm converted to tomatoes, onions, garlic, red meat sometimes, Indian food, and I'll try just about anything (When we lived near D.C., we went with Christian's sister to an Ethiopian restaurant, which was pretty tasty). Just to show how far I've come, here's my new adventurous breakfast food:The green smoothie.

Here's the deal. I've heard a lot of about these on various blogs and from friends, but I'm not a veggie fan and I'm certainly not a health nut. But--I do like to try new things and I'm trying to add healthier habits into my own and my kids' diets. So this appealed to me. And miracle of miracle, I actually like it. Even more miraculous, my kids do, too. If they didn't, I may not have made it again so soon after the first try. Rachel and Aaron are the most resistant to eating veggies, but they're the ones who like it the most.
Here's what I do. I fill the blender with baby spinach, add a few splashes (an exact measurement) of OJ, and a banana. I think the banana is an original twist, or maybe not, but I find that it improves the texture. Oh, and in the picture I put some fresh peach in, but it isn't necessary. Blend and drink. Some people swear this takes away their cravings for sweet foods, but I can't say I've experienced it yet. I will say that it helps me feel like I've started the day off right and that helps me stay on track later on. We usually do a green smoothie 3-ish days a week, for the past two weeks. Give it a try and tell me what you think! Or if you are one of the friends who told me I should try it, go ahead and tell me you told me so.

Oh, what do you do in the summertime?

Do you take driver's ed (hint, hint, Dana)
or stay home in bed and watch all the soaps all day (i.e. Netflix or YouTube)?
Is that what you do? Shame on you.

Shame on me.

Okay, so we've been fairly busy and Christian keeps reminding (nagging) me to update the blog, so here goes--

One of our favorite things to do as a family is go biking/walking/stroller-riding down the Celery Flatts trail in Portage, then play at the park.

Christian is an expert silly pancake-maker--this one resembles Hannah's favorite stuffed dog.
When the kids misbehave, we like to play around with various types of punishment:
Gee, that was fun...let's do it again!
Before you think we're terrible, I promise the kids did this by themselves. Although we did try to persuade Aaron to get wet by placing a kids' chair in the path of the sprinkler--when the water reached him, Aaron was pretty mad at Daddy. He much preferred to stay dry and cute.
I mean, seriously, how cute is he?
For the 4th of July, we were invited to a BBQ at the home of one of Christian's co-workers. They also have 4 kids, ranging in age from 5 yrs to 12 yrs. Our kids had a blast. Can I just say how much I love it when we meet new people who, having no experience with sign language, go out of their way to include Rachel and sign with her? So cool.
The played with some water-soaked balls, absolutely drenching all their normal clothes, which explains why Nathan isn't wearing pants. It also provided a nice excuse for Aaron to run around like Cupid.
And then there's Rachel, already getting chased by the boys.
That evening we had a small fireworks show in our driveway and watched bits of the bigger shows visible from our driveway.
The kids used it as a chance to practice fire safety (Stop! Drop! Roll!) although no-one caught on fire.
But mostly we just hang out...

Bike, please...?

We've been doing a lot of biking lately, since Hannah learned and Rachel and Nathan are interested in training wheels...except for me (cuz I don't have a bike). I saw this bike (see sidebar) on another blog and fell in love--if you click on the link and check it out, you can help me maybe win it (and you get to see how cool it is). I guess you could enter to try to win it, too. But if you do, you have to share with my cuz its my idea. I mean seriously, its pretty cool. Just wanted to share.
